Q: Something that intrigues me about McLuhan is
his literary and even religious influences and how
he shaped those influences into a career espousing
modern technology. How do you think those kinds
of ancient influences were brought out in his
modern theories?
A: I think if you scratch McLuhan’s version of an
ideal global village very hard you will come back to
the medieval papacy, in a sense, where there was a
at least in McLuhan’s mind perhaps, a concept of a
global village maybe not connected with
technology but connected through faith and
through institutional response, i.e. the Church. I
